We really have had a great week so far, having done plenty of flights and having many many happy passengers fullfilling their dreams. We hope this weather is here to stay for September, could this be the summer we have been waiting for?
″At all times you were relaxed and in control, which made us feel at ease″
″Dear Russell & Emily, We would like to thank you for our first Balloon ride and experience, which was carried out in a relaxing but professional manner.
At all times you were relaxed and in control, which made us feel at ease. The weather conditions of the day made it very tranquil, breath taking overviews and related knowledge of the balloon controls and area's we were passing over. Health and safety from our first meeting were simple to understand and fun right the way through to the preparation for landing position. We felt we were involved in the details of unloading and loading, which gave us an insight into the many ropes, controls, clips and essential tidiness which make the complicated issues look simple.
Thank you for a wonderful flight and experience of our lives which we will never forget. Have a good day, George & Heather″
″My wife Geraldine was over the moon about her flight″
″I would just like to say a big thank you for a lovely balloon flight this morning. It really was the best, a really good morning....My wife Geraldine was over the moon about the flight so you have flown very happy people.″
We did a lovely dawn balloon flight on Wednesday in our VIP balloon (a flight just for 2) and it wasn't just a balloon flight, but a wedding proposal!
I had to drive ahead of the balloon and lay out a massive banner reading "will you marry me?" in a field, where the passengers were guaranteed to see it - with some amazing balloon control from the pilot they drifted over the banner, I was waiting poised in the field wondering.......when over the radio came cheers of excitement!! "She said yes!!" PHEW.
The chap brought along a ring and even got down on one knee - clasping tightly onto the ring making sure he didn't flick it over the side into the abyss of cut stubble ;0)
When they landed, the happy couple couldn't have looked more pleased. It was lovely. Massive congratulations to them both - it was a pleasure to help make it very special and such a big suprise for the bride-to-be.
If you would like to make a special announcement or buy a great gift for someone, or even treat yourself, why not come ballooning: purchases can be made online: buy a balloon flight
We have been loving this weather!! What a bumper month for flights. We are so pleased to have got so many flights away in June, lets hope July is the same, and August and the rest of this season.
When people see balloons flying they immediately think to get in touch and use their voucher too! This is great news for us, it fills up our booking diary and gets everyone in the mood for something exciting.
With the summer solstice sunset times it means we are meeting at the latest time we will for the whole year, currently at about 18.30 - 18.45 so it makes it very easy for poeple to come and join us after work in the midweek and to make a great day of it at the weekends - grabbing a bite to eat early before their flight!!
Long may the sun shine - it keeps us busy and our passengers happy. Get in touch to book your flight if you haven't already, you can purchase flight vouchers online: flight vouchers and prices or if you have vouchers already get in touch and we can let you know our availability!!
The balloon festival was a real success this year with fabulous weather the crowds drew in to see over 20 balloons launch on the Saturday evening. With each and every balloon launch the crowd whooped and hollered with delight.
We enjoyed being part of the fesitval and for passengers to tak part in the balloon flying rather than just spectate. If you want to reserve your space for next year, just get in touch - it is such a wonderful experience flying in a balloon, let alone when there are so many other balloons in the sky with you. We were the only commercial rides company offering flights from the festival, so spaces are limited, but to ensure you are one of the many happy fliers waving to the crowd on your way up, do get in touch.
We flew right over Broadway tower which meant fantastic views over the Vale of Evesham and Broadway, not to mention all the little delightful towns tucked away in the hills.
With other attractions at the festival there is plenty to do for the family and friends. This year had a fantastic hovercraft display and classic cars.
High Road Balloons will be booking spaces fro next years festival so if you would like to be one of the passengers departing from quite a big and very exciting event, then get in touch.
We really like balloon festivals because they bring ballooning to a lot of people that may not have been involved before.
There will be around 16 balloons ascending from Corporation meadow next to the River Avon on the weekend of 11th, 12th and 13th June. In the evening on Saturday 12th spectators will be treated to a night glow of balloons and firework display choreographed to music.
Come along for a spectacular view of the mass ascents made in the early mornings and evenings. There will be other attractions over the weekend - in the past these have included a classic car rally with cars from the 1930's through to the 1970's, a fun fair, pig roast and a cider and ale bar.
We will be flying our passenger rides balloon from the festival over the weekend. Tickets are now being sold for the festival. if you would like to fly from the festival please get in touch as the spaces are limited and are being sold on a first come first served basis.
Visit our website for general information about balloon flights or call us on: 01386 593614 if you would like to speak to us about the festival and buy a voucher and book a space.
Having flown the Lions balloon for the past few seasons we have now decided to upgrade to a shiney new red, white and blue balloon.
We still carry 8 passengers so haven't sold out to flying a bus, the experience is still very personal and with Russell the pilot in the middle of the basket everyone can have a word with him and ask questions. The basket is a 'double T' with compartmentalised sections, with padded floor and sides - for added passenger safety and comfort. It is made from wicker with padded suede along the top....it is very comfortable, luxurious and the balloon flies very well.
High Road Balloons are celebrating a fantastic start to the 2010 season. With this glorious weather we have managed to get some really nice flights under our belt which means lots and lots of happy passengers, we hope that it will carry on all summer? (That might be asking too much)
We have had some kind emails already from our customers:
"I just wish to say a big thank you to Russell for an excellent flight on Friday 16th April.
It was a wonderful experience and I really appreciated all the attention to detail he gave and also
the consideration he gave to me as a not very able person.
Thank you very much"
Kathleen Dunning
"Thank you Russell for a fantastic flight on Friday evening. I really enjoyed the experience and would definitely recommend your company. Your friendly and professional manner made it an experience to be remembered

A launch site for the 2010 UK Gordon Bennett Gas Balloon Race has been confirmed. In September 2010 the balloons will start the race from Bristol, which already hosts Europe's largest annual meeting - Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. The Gordon Bennet event will confirm Bristol's claim as a world capital for ballooning.
In order for a country to host the race, a participant from that country must win the subsequent race. In over 100 years the UK has not won until 2008, when the victory of David Hemplman-Adams and Johnathon Mason confirmed the UK to hosting....this year!!
First held in 1906 in Paris this event is the oldest aeronautical event in the world. The rules are very simple. The balloon landing furthest from the take-off site wins. Traditional gas balloons make flights which last for several days. Each balloon carries a tracker device which relays the balloons position back to base - this information is put on the website so you can follow and watch how the race proceeds over three to four days.
Traditional gas balloons are used in the race, using hydrogen and sand bags. The design of gas ballons has hardly changed in over 225 years but technology has changed and modern facilities will be used for meteorology, communication and navigation systems.
We at High Road Balloons are very excited about the forthcoming event and will be eagerly following the race. This year is history in the making for British ballooning and we can happily suggest this is an event you should put in your diary. Get yourself to Bristol and have a family fun day out.
There will be lots of other events happening at the festival which is taking place at Crown Meadow in Evesham - some of these include, fun fair, ferret racing, classic car rally and lots of other stalls to entertain the whole family. In the evenings there will be night glows where the balloons (should be about 20) will glow up like lanterns in time to music and so all in all it should be a good display.
Flight vouchers will be valid for 12 months so in the event that the weather is not suitable for flying from the festival then you will have plenty of opportunity to fly with us from one of our regular launch-sites in Worcester or Walton Hall near Stratford upon Avon :)
Other events at the festival will be: emergency services displays, a craft fayre and a cider bar!!!
Well...let's hope this summer is going to be as good as the long range forecasts suggest :0) Certainly we have been enjoying some fine weather and I am pleased to say we have flown many of our passengers - many of whom have taken to the skies on their first attempts! We always ensure the weather conditions are safe for flying before we take to the skies and this leads to enjoyable balloon flights :0)
It is always good to see the reactions on the faces of the people we fly when we take to the skies and the effect the whole balloon flying experience has on our passengers.
It truly is a fine thing to fly in a hot air balloon and float on the breeze - to have the time and freedom to look around without the encapsulation and noise that happens with other types of aircraft flying is really good for the soul. I had the pleasure to fly some fixed wing aircraft pilots among my passengers last night and to be able to fly without constant engine drone was something they really preferred about flying in the hot air balloon.
We launched from Walton hall - a fantastic and historic setting - which was an excellent place to begin our balloon ride and indeed to return to afterwards where we celebrated the occasion with some chilled champagne!
No two balloon flights are the same and it was with pride ad pleasure that I flew one of our passengers for the second time the other day. He enjoyed the experience so much after flying with his son last season that he returned to fly with his wife earlier this month :0) The flight was exhilarating and we flew in a completely opposite direction to that which we flew in during his previous High Road Balloons flight - both flights were superb :0)
Here's hoping for more glorious weather so we can all have a great summer!

High Road Balloons recently took a balloon to Thailand as part of the Thai Tourist Board initiative to promote Hot Air Ballooning in Thailand. The Thai Tourist Board and several other generous sponsors facilitated the shipping of our balloon along with the balloons of 25 or so other teams from all over the world. The event was extremely popular and was attended by 300,000 Thai people all keen to see the hot air balloons take to the skies. For many Thai people this was perhaps the one and only time they would see a hot air balloon up close and for a lucky few it would have been the one and only chance they may have to fly in one! High Road Balloons are very grateful to the oganisers of the event EARTH WIND AND FIRE and to the wonderful people of Thailand for the generous hospitality they afforded us - THANK YOU!!
High Road Balloons have today launched their new website!!!!!!!!!!!
Emily has been working super hard to have it finished for today.
We have a few additions to this version. You can still of course book on line and get lots of information. We are working on our Frequently asked Questions page and some top tips for choosing the right flight for you - taking into mind time and work restrictions.
We have a few new pages and links to gallery photos etc but lets rest assured that even this super-edition website will always be a work-in-progress. We strive to be better ourselves and with this in mind need to keep the website evolving.
If you have any suggestions please email Emily@ info@highroadballoons..co.uk
We hope you like the new look - still in-keeping with beautiful colours and ballooning ethos,
High Road Balloons have been running a competition to win a flight in a hot air balloon with us. Our competition has been raising money for Us in a Bus a charity who work with adults with severe, profound and multiple Learning Disabilities. We have now drawn the winning ticket which will go to S.V Wilson of Studley, Warwickshire.
This month we have raised a total of £100 for Us in a Bus. £100 does not seem like an awful lot however it will certainly pay for 2 days sessional work or some new equipment.
Us in a Bus are very pleased to have money donated as they are a 'not for profit' charity they somewhat rely upon the kindness of people and companies doing things to help, Janet Gurney - Chief Executive at Us in a Bus comments,
“it’s help like this that literally helps to keep Us in a Bus on the
road. We’re in the business of helping people with profound learning
disabilities have fun, so it’s lovely to get support from another organisation
which focuses on helping others have fun too – you in a balloon helping Us in a
Bus! We hope the winner of your competition has a great time on her balloon
flight – and many thanks to all your other ticket-buyers who’ve helped raise
this money.”
We will be taking the winner Sue Wilson for a lovely balloon flight on Saturday 18th October (weather permitting).
High Road Balloons are having an Autumn Sale with some great affordable prices - offering people the chance to fly with us and experience the wonderful and beautiful changing colours of the season! Book now to guarantee your great value hot air balloon flight with us. The best ballooning experience around.
Hasn't it been a real pleasure to have had a feeling of summer? We have been robbed so far of our long hot summer days and clear evening skies - until 2 weeks ago when we were delighted at the coming of fine weather. High Road Balloons have flown many of our passengers during the last 2 weeks and felt like it was finally summer. Over the skies of Stratford-upon-Avon and Northampton we have been seen with our glorious balloons taking people up to 3 / 4,00 ft and returning to the ground nice and safely with smiling faces. Yet again High Road Balloons have a 100% satisfaction rating from our passengers who have said wonderful things about our service,
"Hi Emily & Russell,
May we take this
opportunity to thank you both for such an enjoyable evening on our maiden
balloon flight. You were very professional and made the whole experience so
relaxing that we were sorry when it was over. It made a wonderful start to
Sue's special birthday celebrations. We are already recommending you to friends
and work colleagues...... The in flight
photograph is a great souvenir......Hopefully we will have another
flight with you before too long, so thanks again for a wonderful time.
Our very best wishes,
Nigel & Sue Jennings"
It is our passengers thorough enjoyment of our balloon flights that make it all so worthwhile !!
Bristol Balloon Fiesta this year was a particularly special celebration as it was the 30th Anniversary since the very first fiesta. Russell Collins, Chief Pilot of High Road Balloons, took part in the fiesta flying a Cameron Concept 90 sized balloon advertising the 'Complete Eyecare Formula' artwork, an eye care solution for AMO. (Advanced Medical Optics). Though the weather was changeable and altogether not amazing this year we still managed to tether the balloon for the TV cameras and got some good coverage from the BBC and ITV - this was great value for the client.
We made 2 balloon flights across Bristol City and put on quite a show with the mass launches. With big name balloons such as: House of Fraiser, Sloggi, Monster.com, EDF Energy, Discovery Channel and many many more, over 100 hot air balloons in total
This is the 3rd year Russell has been involved with Bristol and he thoroughly enjoys the balloon flights and the chance to get together with hundreds of other balloonists.......if you saw something at Bristol that gets you excited about ballooning and you want to find out more or come for a hot air balloon flight then you should get in touch with us at High Road Balloons. Equally if you have or work for a company that you think could benefit from the fantastic aeriel adevertising opportunities that a hot air balloon affords - particularly at these kind of events - then by all means get in touch. info@highroadballoons.co.uk Rememeber that balloons are huge and unmissable and unlike other forms of advertising people tend to get their cameras out and take pictures or home movies.
We are heading for the weekend that holds Northampton Balloon Fiesta (August 15th to 17th) where there will be upto 80 hot air balloons. Over the summer months there is a balloon fiesta / meet every weekend and indeed over the winter months there are plenty around the world. If ballooning is what you like then there are some great opportunities out there for you!!
High Road Balloons have just uploaded a movie "What a Lovely Hot Air Balloon Flight" to You Tube. It's based on our lovely flight we did with Mike and Chris Hart in the VIP balloon which we wrote about below. Follow this ballooning link to watch the movie.
I have found this website which feeds you reviews and links for other websites based upon your interests. I have listed our blog site with 'Stumbleupon' hoping to find more blogs and websites based upon a shared interest....hot air balloons and flying. I think what happens is people rate this site by clicking the link below, then the network of common interest builds? I have added it as a bit of an experiment - if people are looking for sites about hot air balloons then hopefully High Road Balloons will be able to direct them to some interesting stuff - like our website:
So - you have been on a helicopter ride, what next? Ballooning. A parachute jump was fab, but what else can you do? Ballooning. Hired a classic car for the day and want to do something else fun? Try ballooning. Want to find something extra cool and fun to do, ballooning. Had enough of searching for that ultimate gift idea - a hot air balloon flight voucher is what you need. We often hear our passengers say, "I've done a bungy jump, had a flying lesson, been on a track day" and "I've always wanted to go in a hot air balloon". High Road Balloons see our ballooning experiences as a once-in-a-lifetime treat, or if you're really lucky more than once! A hot air balloon flight is a 3-4 hours full experience. It makes for an early morning exhilarating activity or an evenings entertainment to look forward to. Some companies call it a 'Red Letter Day' along with the airplane flight lesson, track day, parachute jump, swimming with dolphins, spa day etc. High Road Balloons specialise in hot air balloon flights, so your experience is in our hands - we are truly passionate about ballooning and want to share our love of the sport with others. We believe we can offer the best hot air balloon experiences in the whole of the UK.

'Balloons and Gliders' is a grass roots hot air balloon and gliding meet where we will be flying 2 slots on Sunday 20th July. We will be flying at dawn and dusk - and during the day gliders will be taking to the skies. If the weather is good on Saturday 19th July we will launch the event with an evening flight.
All balloons are welcome, there is no entry fee and gas is at cost price. What we are trying to achieve here is a great day - with some good flights and the opportunity to swap some balloon flights for gliding. If we can take some of the Shenington Gliding Club members up in our balloons, they will return the favour and take some balloonists for a flight.
We went gliding the other day at Shenington and it was really good fun. We had a aero-tow each, rather than a winch launch. The aero-tow is rather gentle, 'The ladies way' they call it. I loved it. We released at about 2000ft and went off to find some thermals. This was quite an unusual feeling as us balloonists avoid the bumpy clouds entirely! We were soaring round and round up and up then down and round....you get the gist of it. Searching for the big lift. We certainly found some on a few occasions. Gliding from big lumpy cloud to another - trying to keep the lift and stay in the air. With no engines it was quite an bizarre sensation. The landing was very exciting too - descending steeply and keeping the speed up, I was quietly wondering if this was normal? The ground came very close very quickly - but my pilot Jane was fantastic. She rounded out at the bottom and we flew horizontally for a little while then she gently bumped it down. I must say it was far gentler than any jet plane landing i have ever experienced - especially with Easy Jet!
So - my general feeling about gliding is - try it, you might like it! I did. Come along to the 'Balloon and Gliders Grass Roots Meet' being held at Shenington Gliding Club on July 19th and/or 20th for some fun and 'swappsie' flying.
Mary and the gang at the Gliding club are super friendly and are really keen to get more people to experience gliding - like the High Road Balloon Team, they are passionate about their sport / activity and like to share the experience with others. The club house has a fully stocked bar and we are hoping to have a BBQ on the Saturday night and during the day on Sunday - weather permitting.
If you are interested in coming along or if you want to know anything you can,
There is plenty of space for camping and caravans - if you want to come on Saturday and be ready early for a dawn flight, the club has good facilities - toilets and showers. We look forward to seeing you - all welcome.
What a lovely hot air balloon flight - the High Road Balloons team had the genuine pleasure of taking Mike and Chris Hart of Northampton for a VIP flight from Walton Hall & Hotel on Monday evening. Conditions were perfect and the visability was excellent. A small gathering of interested spectators gathered to watch and wave Mike and Chris off into the skies. Reaching altitudes of upto 3,500ft above mean sea level the flight afforded beautiful views of Warwickshire and even as far as the Malvern Hills. The balloon tracked eastward and landed safely and gently near the lovely village of Kineton. The balloon was greeted by local residents who were interested in having a good look at the balloon and even helped us pack away! A big thank you, always much appreciated.
Mike and Chris have had nothing but kind words following their experience and sent us an email to say,
"A big thank you for a really enjoyable evening on Monday. Chris and I will always remember the amazing flight we had - and on such a beautiful evening. Walton Hall was a great location from which to fly and we both welcomed the opportunity to get involved in the preparations for the flight. You both impressed us with the care and attention given to preparing for the flight and we left the ground feeling entirely at ease. Russell kept us well-informed during the flight and ensured a safe and comfortable landing at the end of our journey. A great time was had by all. Brilliant!! We will certainly recommend you to friends."
Thanks to Mike, Chris and the villagers of Kineton for making this flight one to remember. What a lovely high Road Balloonshot air balloon flight.
The hot air that makes a balloon round and gives it the lift required to carry all that weight is not just warm - it's hot. The temeprature at the crown - thats the highest point in a balloon - is around 100 degrees C, the same as the boiling point for water!
So, where does all this heat come from? The burners. They work on a similar principle to a gas stove, although a hot air balloon burner system uses liquid propane which is vapuorised in stainless steel heating coils before it is ignited at the jets by a pilot flame.
Just as balloons come in different sizes burners do too. A bigger balloon will require a greater power to lift it. The pilot uses the burner to heat the throughout the balloon flight and part of the trill in ballooning is the loud woosh of the burner.
The balloon basket has reamined virtually unchanged since the eighteenth century. There have been technical applications to the burner, the envelope and the flight control systems but there has been little advance on the comfort of a wicker basket - in recent years some modern variations have appeared and in the early days some gondola styles were tried out.
A typical balloon basket is made of rattan and willow and a plywood floor is usually fitted. The edges have a rawhide binding, with padding and a suede trim on the top for comfort, protection and handling. Stainless stell wires and upright supports are built into the structure of the basket for extra strength and support. These wires and/or uprights are used to attach the burner frame.
Hot Air Balloon baskets come a variety of shapes and sizes, with abilities to hold up to 20 passengers during the flight. The bigger the basket, the more compartments it will have. A small balloon sized 77,000 cubic feet could carry pilot plus two passengers in an open square shaped basket, however a commercial operations balloon sized 210,000 cubic feet could carry pilot plus eight or nine passengers in a rectangle shaped basket with multiple partitions or sections.
The basket remains the traditional element in modern ballooning with romantic and evocative images of wicker and rattan.
The envelope is the balloon shaped fabric part which holds the air and floats above the basket. Only 2 types of yarn are suitable to make the fabric of hot air balloons: nylon (polyamide) and Dacron (Polyester). Dacron can withstand higher temperatures, but Nylon can be made stronger and lighter. Our Hot air balloon envelopes are made from Nylon.
Woven fabric has a mesh like structure which allows air to be passed through it - a balloon needs to retain the air so the fabric is coated with a material which seals the fabric. Polyurethane is commonly used with hard-wearing minerals added such as silicone or a synthetic rubber called 'neoprene. This coating is applied under pressure by a machine. All coatings contain ultraviolet inhibitors to slow down and delay the degredation caused by sunlight.
Typical balloon fabrics weigh between 1.2oz and 2.4 oz per sqaure yard. These fabrics have tensile strengths of 40 to 100lbs per inch wide strip.
An infinate variety of shapes and designs can be achieved by the designers and manufacturers of hot air balloons.
High Road Balloons are now even greater value - considered the best in Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Northamptonshire for a great hot air balloon flight and adventure.
We have 2 balloons. Both are available for private charter. Our smaller 2 passenger balloon has been proven quite popular for anniversaries, birthdays and wedding hire (we have had many marriage proposals in our balloons) or for many other occasions you can think of!
We also have an 8 passenger balloon which can be chartered for families, corporate hire and functions, parties or groups of friends. We may be able to arrange for us to come to your village or town if you can get together 8 people for a hot air balloon flight. We could take-off from your village green or recreation park (permissions required) or even your land if you have space.
If you would like to buy one, two or any number up to 8 vouchers then there are options regarding which type of voucher you choose:
A 'Midweek Flight Voucher' is valid Monday through to Friday (including Friday evening but not Bank Holidays.
A 'Standby Flight Voucher' is valid anytime but you are unable to book a specific date. We would call you with 48 or 24 hours notice that we have a flight. You would be able to decline our dates on up to 5 occasions. For full details of prices and online booking please visit our website www.highroadballoons.co.uk
A hot air balloon is made up of components that fit together. The crew will prepare the balloon for a flight at the launch site and will happily explain how a balloon works. Firstly there is the 'basket' which is made from wicker. This is the part of the balloon which the passengers stand in during the flight. The basket also hold the flight cylinders or 'gas tanks' and of course the pilot. Once the basket is off-loaded from the trailer and put in the correct postion for the direction of flight (balloons travel in the same direction as the prevailing wind) the 'burner' is fitted. This is the part of the balloon that changes the gas into fire and heats the air in the balloon thus providing lift. The burner is attached and the balloon basket is laid on it's side. At this point the 'envelope' is unveiled. This is the fabric part of the hot air balloon (the balloon shaped part) which attaches to the burner frame. The envelope is stretched out and filled with cold air by means of an 'inflator fan'. The air enters the envelope at the 'mouth'. This is the big opening at the bottom of the envelope. The cold air helps the fabric of the envelope lift and become more of a balloon shape. Once the envelope is sufficiently filled with cold air the pilot lights his burners and gently heats the air inside. At this point the air expands and so does the envelope. The air becomes warm enough that it rises - lifting the envelope up and making the balloon stand up. The hot air balloon is now ready to fly. Once the passengers are loaded and the pilot has completed his safety checks the restraint line is released and the balloon floats gently above and is carried in the direction of the wind.
Each hot air balloon flight lasts approximately one hour and with the very nature of ballooning each one is unique. There are many different options when it comes to buying a 'flight voucher'. It largely depends upon when you want to fly, in which size balloon and how many people you want to buy vouchers for. You can book online at www.highroadballoons.co.uk or call us for more information or if you would like to speak to one of us about the options available to you.
